Supplies List:
We can always use more supplies throughout the year. If you ever want to donate pencils, black dry erase markers, eraser toppers, construction paper, Scotch tape, glue sticks, or other office supplies, I will graciously accept them.
Homework :
Homework consists of 3 spelling activities and a reading log. All homework is due on Wednesdays.
Spelling words will be sent home on Thursdays. There will be anywhere from 10-15 words per week. The words follow certain patterns that we are studying in class. In the Communicator folder are 12 spelling activities from which to choose. The children should choose 3 spelling activities to complete each week. The spelling activities are to be completed on the lined paper found in the literacy section of the Communicator. The homework spelling activities are really just studying for the spelling test disguised as homework.
Homework also consists of logging 100 minutes of reading per week. You and your child may choose how the minutes are dispersed throughout the week. The children may also choose the texts that they want to read and log (chapter book, picture book, comic book, magazine, newspaper, blog, etc.). Please do not forget to write the amount of time spent reading as you log. Each entry must be signed in pen by a parent. This ensures that parents have witnessed the reading and leaves no room for discrepancies. All 100 minutes must be signed by a parent to receive full credit. Each entry should be signed.
Late Policy: Wednesday= 100% Thursday= 75% Later= 0%
If there is ever an issue with homework, please email me during the corresponding week of missed homework. I am flexible if you communicate with me.

Spelling Tests & Other Assessments:
I will send graded papers home for you to view. This is a great way for you to see your child's progress. Please sign the graded test and RETURN it to school. I keep the tests in a portfolio to use for grades, conferences, or any other important meetings pertaining to your child. Your signature shows me that you and your child are communicating about tests and progress.
Spelling tests consist of the 10-15 assigned words for the week PLUS new words that contain the weekly spelling pattern. For example, if the weekly spelling pattern is 3-letter blends (str-, scr-, squ-. thr-), I will give the students 8-10 new words using that pattern to see if they can apply the pattern. Memorization is a great skill but I want to see application too. I ONLY grade the weekly spelling pattern in the new words. If I gave the students the word 'squat' and they spelled it incorrectly as 'squot', I would not count it wrong because they used the weekly spelling pattern correctly. I do not think that it is fair to assess the students on patterns that we have not covered yet.
Spelling tests also contain 2 sentences. The sentences allow me to assess grammar. I look at capitalization, punctuation, sentence structure, and the application of the grammar rules/patterns that we are studying in class. The number of sentences will grow as we proceed throughout the year.
